Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey monument regulations vary by cemetery, by section within a cemetery, and by the faith tradition governing the burial ground. Height limits for upright monuments range from 18 inches in some flat-only sections to 48 inches in unrestricted traditional sections. Setback distances from lot lines typically fall between 6 and 12 inches. Monuments of New Jersey confirms the specific regulations for every cemetery and lot before producing the design drawing. Families see a compliant design before any granite is purchased.

Foundation Requirements

New Jersey's frost line — approximately 36 to 42 inches below grade — determines the minimum foundation depth for permanent monuments. Foundations that do not reach this depth heave and tilt within a few NJ winters. Monuments of New Jersey's installation crew prepares each foundation to the depth and method specified by the cemetery, whether that is a poured concrete footing, a prepared granite base installation, or a leveled bed. Monuments are set level and checked before the crew leaves the site.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemeteries throughout New Jersey maintain specific design guidelines beyond general height and setback rules. Catholic cemeteries in Morris and Essex counties typically require a Christian cross or religious figure. Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Passaic counties often welcome Hebrew inscriptions and traditional Jewish symbols while limiting figural carving. Orthodox sections may specify flat markers only. Muslim cemeteries may require specific burial orientation. Monuments of New Jersey's designers confirm denomination-specific rules at the start of every project and build them into the monument design.

Our Collection

Our Monuments (General) Collection

NJ Monuments

NJ monuments from Monuments of New Jersey encompass the full range of forms in use at New Jersey cemeteries. Family monuments — larger upright stones with multiple panels for inscriptions across generations — are designed with the initial panels carved and finish-matched blank panels reserved for future use. Companion monuments present two names in a unified composition: a die wide enough for both inscriptions, proportioned to read as a single piece. Traditional upright monuments in die-base-cap construction stand 20 to 36 inches on the die, carrying inscriptions and any sculptural elements with classical proportion. Slant monuments, flat monuments, bench monuments, and mausoleum components complete the line. Every piece is fabricated from American-made granite — Barre Gray, India Red, Mahogany, or Black Galaxy — and hand-carved by our Morris County, NJ artisans to a standard that lasts generations.

Granite Options

Granite color reflects what the family wants the monument to convey. Barre Gray — Vermont's cool silver granite — is the foundational choice for family monuments and traditional upright stones throughout NJ. India Red suits companion monuments and family monuments where warmth draws the composition together. Mahogany granite, deep burgundy with black patterning, creates a monument of quiet distinction. Black Galaxy, with gold mineral flecks visible in sunlight, makes hand-carved inscriptions especially vivid against the polished background. All four colors are on display in Monuments of New Jersey's Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

Every monument produced at Monuments of New Jersey begins with a scaled design drawing reviewed and approved by the family. The drawing shows the die dimensions, base proportions, inscription layout, typeface, and any sculptural or portrait elements. Nothing proceeds to fabrication without written family approval. Hand-carving at our Morris County, NJ workshop follows: inscriptions and relief work incised by artisans using chisels and pneumatic tools, finished individually for depth and clarity. Polishing, assembly, and inspection precede transport to the cemetery. Our own installation crew handles foundation preparation and placement. The family is notified when the monument is set.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every NJ monument at Monuments of New Jersey passes through six stages. First, consultation: we meet with the family, confirm cemetery regulations, and listen to what the monument should express. Second, design drawing: a scaled illustration is produced for written family approval before any granite is ordered. Third, granite selection: the slab is inspected at our Morris County workshop for quality and consistency. Fourth, hand-carving: artisans incise inscriptions and relief work using chisels and pneumatic tools, finishing each element for lasting definition. Fifth, polishing and assembly: mirror-finish polishing, matte sandblasting of carved areas, assembly and inspection. Sixth, installation: our crew prepares the foundation, sets the monument level, and confirms compliance before leaving the cemetery.

Voices

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My husband and I visited Monuments of New Jersey to plan a family monument we could both be part of while we were here to choose it. The staff spoke with us in Russian, which made everything easier, and the drawing they produced was exactly what we had described. The monument stands in Essex County now, and it is everything we hoped.” — Natalya, Essex County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a monuments?

Most NJ monument projects run eight to twelve weeks from design approval to installation. The timeline depends on carving complexity and cemetery scheduling. Simpler forms may be completed more quickly; detailed portrait medallions or extensive sculptural work may require additional time.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Monuments of New Jersey serves cemeteries throughout all 14 New Jersey counties. We manage cemetery compliance, foundation preparation, and installation statewide. Families anywhere in NJ can work with us directly.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Every monument is fabricated to the specific regulations of the cemetery and section where it will be placed. We confirm height limits, setback requirements, foundation specifications, and faith-specific design rules with the cemetery office before the design drawing is produced.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Family photographs, sketches, and examples from other cemeteries are all useful starting points. Our designers translate any input into a scaled drawing for approval. Portrait medallions are carved from clear photographs.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Monuments of New Jersey works with veteran families on both VA-provided government markers and privately crafted monuments with military imagery — branch insignia, service seals, flag reliefs — all hand-carved by our artisans.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
